Jalshakti Abhiyan 2.0 at Kalbhonde

This project involves the construction of subsurface bunds (underground barriers) downstream of Kalbhonde's two main wells. These structures will impede the natural runoff of groundwater, effectively storing it within the soil aquifer. This will recharge the wells and ensure a consistent, accessible water supply through the critical summer months, directly benefiting the community and empowering women.

Challenge Addressed

In Kalbhonde village, despite receiving adequate rainfall, the community faces a severe water scarcity crisis every year. The two primary wells, which are the main source of drinking water, dry up completely by the end of December. This forces women and girls to undertake long, perilous journeys to fetch water from distant sources. This daily struggle leads to:
Significant loss of productive time and energy.
Increased health and safety risks for women.
Hindrance to overall village development and well-being.
The core issue is the rapid depletion of groundwater due to a lack of sub-surface structures to hold the water within the village's watershed area.

Our Approach

Our solution is a low-cost, high-impact, and sustainable water conservation technology. Instead of creating new water sources, we optimize the existing hydrological cycle by:
Arresting groundwater runoff through sub-surface engineering.
Enhancing natural aquifer storage capacity in the village vicinity.
Ensuring well recharge to provide a lasting, local water supply right up to the next monsoon.

Objectives Achieved

  • Primary Goal: Eliminate the water scarcity problem in Kalbhonde village from January to June.
  • Ensure Water Availability: Provide a consistent water supply in both target wells throughout the summer months.
  • Reduce Women's Burden: Save thousands of productive hours for women and girls currently lost in water collection.
  • Promote Health & Safety: Mitigate the health risks and physical strain associated with long-distance water fetching.
  • Enable Village Development: Free up community time and energy for education, livelihood activities, and overall tribal empowerment.
